who we are
About Us
The Africa Biomedical Engineering Alliance (ABEA) is a non-profit, professional alliance that brings together biomedical engineers, associations, educators, researchers, and policy advocates from across the African continent. We are committed to advancing healthcare systems through the development and deployment of innovative health technologies tailored to Africa’s unique challenges.
ABEA was founded on the belief that biomedical engineering is a key driver of sustainable, equitable, and effective healthcare. Through collaboration, we aim to unify the biomedical engineering profession across Africa and create a strong, organized voice that influences policy, education, and technological advancement.

Why It Matters
Biomedical engineers play a critical role in ensuring safe, effective, and sustainable health technologies from hospital infrastructure and diagnostic tools to maintenance systems and innovation hubs. Yet in Africa, this field remains under-recognized and under-resourced.
ABEA is changing that by building a professional ecosystem that strengthens biomedical engineering’s impact on health systems ultimately improving care, saving lives, and reducing inequality.
